Is There Good WiFi in Belize?
One of the most common questions asked by those thinking about moving to Belize is whether or not good WiFi is available. In today’s interconnected world, having access to reliable and fast internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity.
In the past Belize had a mixed reputation with regards to its internet connectivity. While coverage was quite good, reliability and cost were not. There were several reasons for this.
First, the telecommunications company had a monopoly. Second, the government forced service providers to pay high rates for access. It also blocked Skype and other VOIP services. The result? Belize had the second slowest internet in the Caribbean.
Fast forward to the present, though, and all of this has changed. The government allowed competition and loosened restrictions. Rates have dropped dramatically, speeds have improved and reliability has increased.
Excellent WiFi is now available even in rural areas or on islands like Ambergris Caye, which has a thriving expat community. Many expats who have made their home here find they can easily run a business with no problems.
There are two main telecommunication companies in Belize, SMART and BTL. Their WiFi is superb and a DSL line providing high-speed broadband service costs less than $100 a month through BTL.
Because WiFi is so inexpensive, some business owners have accounts with both SMART and BTL to avoid any downtime. For most people this is not necessary, however, since service is down for less than a few hours a month for maintenance.
Providing connectivity is an area in which Belize continues to improve rapidly as internet popularity grows among its citizens. Young Belizeans in particular are quite WiFi saavy. Many use their smart phones to connect to the web and they demand fast, reliable service wherever they go.
Free or paid access is available at almost every hotel, restaurant, bar or coffee shop. For those who don’t have laptops or Smartphones, internet cafes can be found in the cities and larger towns. In addition, BTL offers free WiFi service in all of their offices. This means that even in rural areas, you’ll be able to stay connected.
Even in the most remote locations which do not have fiber optics or cable, there will be small hot-spot devices called MiFis. These use cell phone signals to provide a WiFi signal.
As you can see, given the wide array of options available, you will have no problems with excellent, reliable and inexpensive WiFi access in Belize. This is particularly true in communities like Salt Life Belize which is one of the best places to retire. Here, you’ll find every modern convenience and amenity as well as access to the beautiful beaches and crystal waters of Ambergris Caye and the vibrant night life of San Pedro.
