Belize Announces Re-opening Plan for Tourism

Belize Announces Re-opening Plan for Tourism

Belize will officially reopen for air travel on August 15, 2020. As part of the third phase of a five-phased approach, the Prime Minister of Belize announced that the Philip Goldson International Airport will begin allowing international commercial and private flights. The easing of the current travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic will mean that tourists may begin visiting again and locals who were stranded abroad may return home. There are, however, several health and safety protocols travelers must follow in order to enter and remain in Belize.

Entry Requirements

All travelers will be required to download and provide the required information in the Belize Health app. Each traveler will be assigned a unique number that the Belizean government will use for contact tracing purposes.

All international travelers are encouraged to get a COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of leaving their home country. If the test result is negative, you will be allowed to enter immediately after landing. If you cannot provide a negative test result, you will have to have a COVID-19 PCR test at the airport. If the test result is positive, the Belize government will enforce a minimum 14-day quarantine period.

During Your Stay

All travelers will be expected to follow the proper hygiene and social distancing protocols set forth by the Belize government. You will be required to wear face coverings in all public places, including your hotel, beaches, and national parks and preserves. You will also be required to undergo temperature checks if asked, use hand sanitizing stations, and agree to participate in contact tracing and self-isolation if you or someone you’re traveling with develops COVID symptoms.

Arrangements for Accommodations

Hotels in Belize will open in phases and many will not be available during your stay. As part of your travel planning, make sure you make reservations at a hotel that has received the Tourism Gold Standard Certificate of Recognition. This certificate guarantees that your hotel meets a certain level of enhanced cleaning practices, ensures safe social interactions and has developed strategic workplace policies to minimize physical transactions. The Belize Tourism Board sets the standards required for the certificate and is committed to your safety and well-being.

Due to the phased re-opening, you may have limited choices when it comes to hotels.
