Ambergris Caye is widely considered the most beautiful of Belize’s islands. Which parts of Ambergris Caye live up to this reputation? Here are six places you should visit to experience the true beauty of this island.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan was the first conservation area in Belize. Local residents took action when they realized that uncontrolled diving, snorkeling, fishing and other activities had depleted the area of sea life. Hol Chan is now an officially recognized marine reserve that’s renowned for the amazing diversity of colorful sea life you can see there. Although it’s small, locals consider it one of Belize’s true gems.

Shark Ray Alley

Get your heart pumping when you swim with mantas, rays and nurse sharks in the stunning waters of Shark Ray Alley. You’ll also see living coral and a huge variety of tropical fish. This conservation area close to the Belize Barrier Reef is an unforgettable experience.

Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve

This is a huge wildlife park and marine reserve where you can see the amazing variety Belize’s flora, fauna and sea creatures. The reserve has spectacularly pristine, unspoiled turquoise water, salt marshes, mangroves and grassland. Watch manatees, loggerhead turtles turtles, rays and other fish swim through the waters while herons, foxes, and other animals walk on the shore. You can only reach Bacalar Chico by boat, and you must go with a licensed tour guide.

Mexico Rocks

This is a protected range of 10- and 12-foot rocks that are part of the Belize Barrier Reef system. This area is larger than Hol Chan and likely to be less crowded. It is no less impressive. You can snorkel and dive among starfish, staghorn coral, eels, puffer fish, trumpet fish, sharks, lobsters and green turtles. Because of its relative flatness, Mexico Rocks is an excellent choice for first-time snorkelers.

Don’t expect to see ruins. There is no excavation here yet. This a protected natural area where you’ll also see rare tropical plants and many endangered animals. It’s a great place for a scenic walk.

Secret Beach

The name is a misnomer since Secret Beach is actually a well-known destination, but this beach is a great escape. It’s a long stretch of pristine beachfront known for its calm, shallow water that stretches far out.

Many bars and restaurants have their own private lounging, dining and swimming areas here. Secret Beach is the place to enjoy great food, fun tropical drinks and laid-back nightlife in a gorgeous setting.
