Packing for Belize: Checklist for Dry and Rainy Season

Packing for Belize: Checklist for Dry and Rainy Season

Are you ready for your Belize vacation? Here are some things you must bring when you visit. Most of them are hard to find in Belize, so be sure to bring them with you.

1. Lightweight Clothing

The weather in Belize is warm all year. You can expect daytime temperatures between 80 and 90 and evening temperatures from 60 to 75. The sunny days and high humidity call for lightweight clothing that’s easy to wash. Belize is completely casual, and shorts and tees are acceptable attire almost anywhere.

If you get chilly with air conditioning, bring a light sweater or jacket.

2. Sun Protection

The sun in Belize is probably a lot stronger than the sun where you are. Prevent sunburn and other painful situations by using:

  • Hats with large brims.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Reef-friendly sunscreen.
  • Cover-ups with long pants and sleeves.

A Note About Sunscreen

Over time, ingredients in most sunscreens can erode the delicate coral of the Belize Barrier Reef. The chief culprit is oxybenzone.

Hawaii and Key West, Florida, are planning to enact bans on any sunscreens that contain oxybenzone. Please protect our precious reef by purchasing only sunscreen that’s designated reef-safe.

3. Long Underwear

You might be surprised to see this on the list, but many Belizean tour guides recommend bringing lightweight silk or polypropylene long underwear because it’s great for snorkeling. It protects you from the sun without the use of sunscreen. Don’t forget the sun can be intense in the Caribbean, and the water is no protection from it.

4. Footwear Choices

In Belize, you’ll need flip-flops or sandals and some sturdy walking shoes. River shoes make it comfortable to walk on the rocky areas near cave tubing, river cruise and kayaking adventures. If you’re planning a jungle trek, a hike to a Maya ruin or other hardcore walking adventure, be sure to bring hiking boots.

5. Bathing Suits

You should pack at least two bathing suits. You’ll probably spend a lot of time in the water when you’re here.

6. Pack for the Rainy Season

The rainy season in Belize doesn’t mean constant rain. It means short, intense showers will interrupt your sunny days.

When is the rainy season? It’s June through November, but most of the rain falls in September and October. In addition to the other items, you should pack:

  • Sandals designed to grip on wet surfaces. You’ll be miserable trying to walk on wet surfaces in regular flip-flops.
  • A waterproof jacket or poncho.
  • Ziploc bags to keep your essentials dry.

7. Bug Repellent

Belize has many biting bugs including mosquitoes, sand flies, black flies and fire ants. Protect yourself by using bug repellent and wearing closed shoes when you’re walking through jungle areas.
