What You Need to Know About Relocating to Belize

If you’re thinking about moving to Belize, you may have questions about the practical aspects of relocation. Here are some things you need to know.

Do I Need a Visa to Move to Belize?

You don’t need a visa to enter Belize if you’re coming from the US or Canada. You can stay on an extended tourist visa, get permanent residence or enter the country under the qualified retirement program (QRP).

30-Day Tourist Visa

Entering with a passport allows you to stay for 30 days. You must renew your stay every 25 days with the Belize immigration authorities.

You will have to pay a monthly fee every month that you’re in Belize. You must also show evidence that you have enough money to stay in Belize for another month.

Permanent Residence Status

You can continue renewing your tourist visa for up to a year.

After a year of renewing your tourist visa, you can apply to become a permanent resident. You will need references from at least two Belizean citizens, a police background check and proof of income. With a permanent residence, you can legally work in Belize.

After five years as a permanent resident, you can choose to become a citizen of Belize.

Qualified Retirement Program (QRP)

If you are 45 or older and can show consistent monthly income of $2000, you might qualify for this government incentive. Under the QRP, you can bring all your possessions, including cars, boats and other high-dollar items, into Belize free of import taxes. You can also live in the country without having to renew your visa every month.

Can I Get Phone, Internet and Cable Service?

Cell phone service is excellent and inexpensive. It’s best to wait until you’re here to set up a new service.

You can get cable that includes all the same English-language channels you already watch. Belize has several cable and internet providers. If you’re moving to a remote area, you may need satellite service.

Can I Bring My Pets?

You can bring your pets if you have health records showing they are up to date on shots and neutered. You can also adopt a pet once you move to Belize.

Can Foreigners Buy Property in Belize?

It’s legal for foreigners to buy property in Belize. This includes residential and commercial property.

Can I Get a Job?

Until you get permanent residence, you can’t legally work in Belize. You can start a business if your business employs Belizean citizens.
