An Introduction to Belize
Belize is an eclectic Central American country only a couple of hours by plane from North America. Its Caribbean shoreline includes numerous islands, or cayes, and the country is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world. Inland, the country is covered by lush rainforests. Once the homeland of the Maya, there are still ancient Maya cities like Caracol and Lamanai that can be found in the jungle.
Belize used to be a British colony. It is still part of the British Commonwealth, and has the Queen on its currency. Thanks to its legacy of British rule, it has a very stable political and economic system. Its currency is the Belize dollar and is pegged to the US dollar at two to one.
The country is rich in biodiversity – it has the world’s only jaguar preserve as well as a sanctuary for the red-footed booby. It’s home to a wide variety of marine life including many species of endangered turtles as well as rays, eels, nurse sharks and dolphins.
