How to Get to Ambergris Caye, Belize

Ambergris Caye is one of the most popular destinations in Belize. This gorgeous island is about 30 miles off the coast of Belize. It boasts stunning beaches, lively nightlife, wonderful tourist excursions and the charming town of San Pedro. Many people put Ambergris Caye at the top of their must-see list on a visit to Belize.

There are only three ways to get to Ambergris Caye. You can fly, you can take a water taxi or you can take a helicopter.

By Water Taxi

The Belize Water Taxi is a popular, inexpensive way to island hop in Belize. These small boats make regular runs between the popular cayes and the mainland. If you’re in Belize City, you can take the water taxi from the Belize City dock a few miles from the Belize international airport. If you’re in Caye Caulker, you can pick it up at the Caye Caulker dock.

This is a scenic way to travel. You’ll be on the water in full view of the Belize Barrier Reef, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and the many offshore islands that dot Belize.

The water taxi ride takes about two hours from Belize City. It takes 30 minutes from Caye Caulker. Note that the water taxi makes its last run at 5:00 PM. If you’re arriving at Belize City in the evening, you should plan to take an airline flight with either Tropic Air or Maya Island Air.

By Airplane with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air

Ambergris Caye has its own airstrip, which makes air travel a quick, convenient option. To use this option, you’ll first have to fly into Phillip Goldson International Airport in Belize City. Most major cities in the US and Canada have daily flights into Belize City.

From there, you can take local airlines Tropic Air or Maya Island Air for the 20-minute flight to the island. You can also fly from the Belize Municipal Airstrip in Belize City to Ambergris Caye. The flying time is around 15 minutes.

If you’re in another part of Belize, you can catch a local flight at a municipal airport. You’ll find them in most towns including Belmopan, Corozal, Dangriga, Orange Walk, Placencia, San Ignacio and Punta Gorda.

By Helicopter

If you’re feeling adventurous, choose a helicopter ride that takes you close to some of Belize’s most unforgettable spots like the Belize Barrier Reef and the Blue Hole of Belize.
